As we age beyond 40, everyone experiences a progressive loss of muscle strength. This is due to reduced protein synthesis and increased protein breakdown: a process called sarcopenia.
Muscle strength decreases by 2-3% a year, resulting in later life injuries, poor mobility and diminished quality of life.
A cycle of increasing sarcopenia often also occurs, weakness and immobility restricting physical activity and causing further muscular decline.

However, further studies demonstrate how easily this can be prevented through simple resistance exercise and diet changes, literally offsetting the ageing process.
The research papers pictured above are only examples from a large collection of studies demonstrating this effect.
